Os Verdes Anos

At 19, Júlio (Rui Gomes) leaves the countryside for Lisbon, where he starts working as a shoemaker in his uncle Raúl’s shop. The city brings new discoveries, including his love for Ilda (Isabel Ruth), a young domestic worker who visits the shop. Paulo Rocha’s first feature, and one of the foundational works of Portuguese New Cinema, offers a tender yet disenchanted portrait of young people and 1960s Lisbon. The film is also inseparable from Carlos Paredes’s original score, his first composition for cinema.
