Rigoletto, Giuseppe Verdi

The Coliseu Porto Ageas presents a new production of Rigoletto, one of the most powerful dramas in the operatic repertoire, with subtitles in Portuguese and English. Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece takes us into a world of power, seduction and revenge. At the dissolute court of the Duke of Mantua, the jester laughs at, insults and humiliates others as part of his role. Behind that mask lives a father who loves his daughter Gilda with almost desperate tenderness, hiding her from the world as if protecting the last treasure in a palace of vice. That blind, possessive and absolute love will make him vulnerable. When the court decides to take revenge, it uses what he holds most precious to destroy him. Verdi gives the drama music of extraordinary force: stormy, intimate and irresistible, from the elegant cynicism of La donna è mobile to the silent devastation of the final act. Rigoletto speaks of power and powerlessness, love and loss, with a brutal clarity that leaves no one indifferent, whether hearing it for the first time or knowing it by heart. This absolute premiere is a Coliseu commission to Ópera na Academia e na Cidade.
